We rented Mercenaries 2 a couple of weeks back and I really enjoyed it. I didn't get close to finishing it, but I made to at least one major boss fight.
Since we're not in the position to purchase it at this point, I went back to playing the first one, and I think it still holds up. They have different strengths to me. However, I played the hell out of the first one.
The biggest contrast to me is about access to resources. It seems a lot easier to get vehicles and air strikes in the first one, and money is hardly an issue at a certain point. (Seemingly once you get to the northern map.) The sequel's way of handling it seems to be a more realistic challenge, that is a cool mini-game.
