Don't get me wrong - I love fielding A-Wings and TIEs and zipping all over the board, too. Avoiding damage entirely is better than being able to absorb a lot of it.
I think secondary weapon selection is key to using the Y-Wing effectively. The primary weapon value is only 2, so it's going to miss quite a bit. The ion cannon turret gives you three dice, with a reduction in range, and ionizing a target sets it up for a follow-on attack in the next turn. I've put the blaster turret on a Y, but the requirement of a focus token for that one puts me off.
