Hand in Glove

I know it was actually Brubaker who wrote it, but when I'm on trial for beating Mark Millar to death with a pool cue, I will say, in my defense, that he was the person ultimately responsible for killing Captain America, and there will be somebody on the jury for whom that will be a viable defense, and I'll walk.

Yes, I know.  Cap will come back.  But this shit has Gone Too Far.

Alright, with that out of the way ...

Dark Tower:  The Gunslinger Born #2 has given me the happy.  This 7-issue series is Roland's childhood history as related the first time in The Gunslinger and Wizard and Glass.  Susan Delgado arrived in this issue.  For those who've read W&G, you know the heartbreak ahead.  It is going to be a wonderful read.

Civil War: The Initiative has some poo in it, being a Civil War piece, but there's some nifty stuff, too.  Previews of Omega Flight, which I'll probably snap up (5-issue series).  Last panel in the book showcases a somewhat funky-looking version of the old silver-and-black War Machine armor, so I'll probably take a look at Avengers: The Initiative.

Iron Man: Hypervelocity is rocking my socks.  The mostly-sentient armor's internal monologues are really working for me.  This limited series is really pushing my old cyberpunk buttons, and it's the kind of story that I would have really gone bugnuts for way back when.

And I've got a shiny new idea for the All Flesh Must be Eaten game.  This just might come together.

This is not a Love Song

One thing about an employee meeting that eats up 65 minutes of my life, on the busiest day of the workweek - it gives me time to think about a writing project.  An ongoing project.

Godawful cold continues.  16 right now, dropping to 5 overnight.  I know in 6 months, I'll be bitching about the heat, but, man, I have had it with this weather for a while.

Ford's doing something that I think is pretty darn smart.  Starting with the 2008 model year, the Taurus and Sable names are coming back, taking over the 500 and Montego, respectively, and the Freestyle is becoming the Taurus X.  The cars are getting a badly-needed power boost to make them comparable to the competition, and Ford's CEO is making a statement about not resting on a great first-year product (as the company has been notorious for), but instead making incremental improvements in every model year.  Now, assuming the company is able to right its course and survive and thrive, I have a little tiny wishlist.  Since the current Fusion mid-size is built on a Mazda 6-inspired platform, how about putting the Mazda Speed6's go-fast and road-holdy parts (the turbocharged 2.3L I-4 and AWD setup) into a Fusion and calling it a Fusion SHO or SVT?  And since I'm asking nicely, take note that Dodge is about to take away the police cruiser market from the ol' Crown Victoria, so fight 'em hard, and go GM one better, and bring us that mean-sumbitchin' Falcon from Ford Australia.  In all the incarnations except the Ute, please.  Base V6, blown V6, and big ol' V8.

Comics today - Iron Man: Hypervelocity #2 and The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born #1.  Hypervelocity intrigues me.  An extremely hardware-heavy Iron Man story, set before this whole Civil War trainwreck ... and I think maybe it's going to be used to explain Stark's ... craziness during CW.  The Gunslinger comic is a good-looking retelling of one part of the first DT book - Roland's test against Cord and the events immediately surrounding it.  Man.  I'd lost sight of how amazing this was.  Still is, too.

Let's Go

More cold today, and 3-5" of snow predicted in the next 15 hours.  Nothing coming down right now, but the Weather Channel's map shows a big honking mess of snow over Indiana and Illinois, heading our way.  So much for my fleeting plans to try getting in with the Mustang today.  Locals - I'm going to be at the office until at least 8, maybe closer to 9, but if the Explorer and I can help out, do not hesitate to call.

Erin got back safely last night, as a call at 1:15 a.m. let me know.  I'm glad she's back, but, wow, that was some good sleep.  Probably won't get to see her until Sunday, though.  I miss her something fierce.

Will probably finish up World War Z during tonight's bedtime reading.  Man, this is some really good stuff.  Brooks is a fine writer, and I recommend this book to everybody.

The Dark Tower comic series releases today or tomorrow.  Half of my comic purchases for the week, I guess, with Hypervelocity filling out the deliberately truncated list.

Down Under

My knee is mostly healed up.  I only have problems with it if I stand still for several minutes, and a quick short walk takes care of that.  Extra-uber-mega-strength Advil has been my friend.  Less painful living through chemistry.

More snow today.  About an inch on the ground now, and it's coming down steadily.  Could get another inch or so before this is all over.  It's very pretty.  Erin can't enjoy it, but I don't think she's especially upset about it, as she's heading off on her Bahamas cruise in just a few hours.

Sunday is the Super Bowl.  Highly unscientific surveying shows the Colts to be local favorites - they're certainly my pick.

Snapped up Daredevil #93 and Teen Titans #43 last night.  I'm liking Daredevil a lot.  I'm probably going to track down the back issues comprising the "Devil Takes A Ride" arc;  this is some good stuff here.

Lick and a Promise

Because the project I'm working on already just isn't enough, I'm thinking about future work already.

Throughout high school and up until about 1995, I was a big Marvel Comics fan, especially the Avengers family of titles.  During one of the big multi-title events (The Crossing), I got disgusted and quit 'em completely.  Picked up a few issues of various things here and there, but nothing serious.  Now, there's this Civil War thing going on, and I think I'm about ready to find a big ol' vat of tar for Mark Millar (and Rob Liefeld and Kevin Siembieda, just on general principles).

So, with Mutants and Masterminds and the M&M Superlink program, I've got the chance to not only build, but publish, my own damn supers world.  I've given it some thought, and I think it's viable - I've got friends among the artists here at work who have expressed interest in illustrating the thing, and I could get a couple of co-writers in on this, too.

May all come to naught, but tonight, it's sounding really really good.
