One Thing Leads to Another
Apr. 9th, 2007 08:06 amAs Erin was conducting the handbell choir, I attended Easter Sunday services at Union Church yesterday. I find myself constantly contrasting services at Union with those at Bethlehem UMC, where I grew up, and the differences are staggering. At Union, there's no sense that the congregation is there out of habit or to keep gossip down. There's real joy there, and so much of that comes from the pastor. Kent's terrific. He's humorous, enlightening, and amazingly well-spoken. Erin said yesterday that she could listen to him for hours, and I can't disagree - he speaks to the congregation, and you can't help but feel that somehow the process has been a two-way street. It's good for the soul.
The planned Trinity game was scrubbed on account of everybody involved being dead-ass tired for various and sundry reasons. I'm mostly better this morning, but not especially looking forward to going back to 100 Midland Avenue today.
Still reading No god but God. The book moved into the different interpretations of the Quran's words in last night's reading, and it's both encouraging and frightening. If nothing else, it's a solid revelation that twisting the words and ideals of a faith's holy text to better suit personal prejudices and fears is by no means exclusive to Christianity. It's cold comfort.
