The Great Escape
Oct. 5th, 2019 11:04 amThe birthday party was kind of a bust. Good people and all, but I ultimately didn't have it in me to really enjoy things, so I made polite conversation and watched trains go by and rolled out after a couple of hours. Went straight home, had some stew from the slow cooker, mixed a rum and Coke, and was asleep in bed by 11PM. Gods, getting into bed felt so good.
We got sent a couple of winners to fill our open slots. Third shift guy didn't show up, so he was terminated right then, and second shift guy gave his notice on his second day, leaving on the 8th. So, we're just going to politely ignore him since there's no point in training him. These six-day, 48- to 56-hour weeks are getting old.
The extra money is okay, I guess. One of our local model/hobby shops is running its anniversary sale this weekend, so I treated myself to a three-pack of limited-run model train cars - the RJ Corman gondolas, for future t7's reference.
I'm heading down the street to the aviation festival in a little while to see some cool things and people before going to work tonight. I've made a point of driving to the airfield after work the last couple of nights, and got good looks at the B-17 and P-51, among a couple of other planes. I saw four of the aerobatic planes practicing last night, too. This should be a fine little diversion.
The long heatwave finally broke. We've had something like 70+ days with high temperatures over 90F this year, and that novelty wore off a long time ago. Right now, at 11:30AM, it's a comfortable 65F - 20 degrees cooler than this time Thursday morning. Looks like we're even going to get some significant rain tomorrow evening - maybe putting and end to the drought we've dealt with alongside the heat.
