Of Storms, and Trucks, and Remarkable Luck
Mar. 2nd, 2007 12:19 amA tornado hit Enterprise, Alabama, yesterday (3/1), killing 5 at a school. Very sad.
My father, as most of you know, is a trucker. His route this week was into Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.
As he described it, in a phone call tonight, he was in Enterprise, stopped to get a snack and drink before heading into Georgia to pick up a cargo for Corbin. Seeing the approaching nasty weather, he thought about waiting at the store until the storm blew through. He heard a couple of other drivers discussing a tornado that just a few minutes before had passed through to the northeast. With the somewhat questionable logic that members of my family possess, he reasoned that, as he has to go northeast, and a tornado has just passed through that way, he should get on the road, as it's unlikely that another one will come along. So, he gets back on the road and heads out of town.
In about five minutes, the reports start coming over both NPR and his satellite radio - the tornado hitting Enterprise. The school where 5 died was about half a mile from the store he had planned to hole up at.
Whoever or whatever you believe in, thank Him or Her or It or Them that Dad decided to get underway when he did.
