I ran through the final season of Star Trek: Picard. Not bad, but it was a heavy nostalgia trip. Most of the TNG regulars got screen time, but one notable recurring guest showed up in one episode only to die, and I wasn't in love with that decision.

Netflix's Beverly Hills Cop movie was enjoyable enough. There's a chase scene that doesn't quite work for me, but the rest is fun. A few years ago, I rewatched the first movie, and was surprised that, wow, that was a genuinely good movie.

Less than six weeks until I can start looking for another position within the agency. I've been watching the postings off and on, and there are some good options. There are parts of my job that I do like, but they're heavily outweighed by the parts that I very much don't.

It sure is July 4. Every doofus around is setting off the fireworks they bought at whatever tent set up in whatever parking lot. I figure there'll be a few rounds of that hit new guessing game Fireworks or Gunshots tonight, and the news tomorrow morning should be good for a few uncomfortable chuckles.

Charcon's coming up. Still waiting for the GM discount code to arrive. I'm comfortable enough with the adventures I schedule, and should be more so after the test session Tuesday evening. I'm looking forward to this trip - looking forward to seeing some people and getting some breakfast at Tudor's.

I gotta wonder how things are going to be when I read this entry in a year. I figure that things are going to go pear-shaped and that orange bastard will get re-elected and ... the republic ends.

2024 is halfway over. I'm not processing this, more ignoring it than anything else. Time does fly.

This weekend was the Hex retreat, held at Kentucky Dam State Park this time. A lengthy drive to the western end of the state, same as a couple of months ago. I gave myself a little time off after my class Friday afternoon and got to Calvert City around 6PM local time. Met with the others and headed out for dinner. Huge delicious pizza at Mama D's. Games and cooking and eating on Saturday. Breakfast and catching up. A heck of a good time, and plans made to do it again in October, rather than waiting until next year.

I wound up with a free month of Paramount+ right about the time my Apple+ subscription wound down. I've been watching Trek, mostly, and checking out some of the movie offerings here and there. Anson Mount and a couple other Strange New Worlds cast members are going to be at a show here in town next month, so, hey, lots of good optimistic SF in the air.

GenCon says it pulled 50K individual attendees this year, down from the 63K or so from a few years ago. It did feel smaller, and I think the 50K count may be stretching things.

But, whatever.

I finished the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds yesterday. Holy cow, that's good Trek. Every episode had a different vibe going on, and every one managed to feel like Star Trek. I found myself liking these characters more than I had expected to; their adventures and stories just worked for me.

The Paramount+ PS4 app is just a smoldering mess, though.

Weather in the Ohio Valley can be interesting. About four hours ago, I went out to run some errands, and it was ungodly hot - 98F, indexed at 110F. Walking a single block in that heat was painful. Then the thunderstorm rolled in, and a little while ago, the air temp had dropped to 77F. Power outages around town, including on the street behind mine. I stepped outside during the end of the rain, and it felt good out there.

Finally paid a visit to the city's newest game store. Nice place, decent selection of minis games, but it is clearly a collectibles shop before anything else. A couple of the anniversary edition G.I Joe figures tempted me - maybe another time. They have a regular minis painting night on Wednesdays - won't go tonight, but I'll keep in mind for later.

Since renewing my Paramount+ sub (with a free month!), I've torn though half of the fourth season of ST: Discovery. Enjoyable enough Trek, and I'm coming around to the further-future setting. After this, Picard and Strange New Worlds, the latter being the main reason I renewed my account to begin with.

Still really enjoying The Expanse, too.

A Publisher update hit this morning. Downloaded and installed on the Macbook; will update the iMac's version whenever it's finished with the OS update. I'm about to just roll that machine back to factory spec and do a long day of reinstalling certain apps and the music library. Before that, though, I'm going to uninstall Firefox and scrub what I can from it. Something on the machine and in the browser do not get along, and I'm just done watching them fight.

Serif produces a big workbook for Publisher (and the rest of the Affinity line); I ordered a copy today. The user community generally recommends it for new users, so it seems like a reasonable investment. I've watched a handful of Serif's teaching videos and they're well-done and helpful. If I can keep myself in a state of mind to learn and develop this set of skills, I think I'm going to be pleased with these purchases.

Star Trek: Discovery just continues to deliver. I'm watching the last two episodes of Season 3 tonight, and it is absolutely giving me the storytelling and character and everything else I want. And hey, that's Oded Fehr playing future Starfleet's Admiral.

Deja Vu

Christmas Day, RV bomb in Nashville. Last night, a RV was parked in downtown Lexington by a vacationing family - the vehicle wouldn't fit in their hotel garage, surprise surprise - and that caused, well, a police response and evacuation and all that. This afternoon, guess what. Some fool parks his rented RV on 5th Street in front of the Humana building and he and his family skip off to the Kentucky Science Center. Streets closed, buildings evacuated, all manner of hell raised. Stupid fucker.

Gods, I hate people sometimes.

In better news, there's a seven-pound ham in the oven and I have NOTHING to do tonight since both game stores are closed for the holiday and we're not playing anything. It's just now 6PM and I'm about seven seconds away from saying to heck with it all and getting into pajamas for the evening.

I mean, why the hell not? CBS All Access is misbehaving when I want to watch Discovery but Pluto has a The Next Generation channel going, so I'm getting a fix of hopeful and optimistic science fiction before dinner. And probably during and after, too.

Come to think of it, I don't have any demands on my time at all this weekend, except for Alan's M&M game tomorrow afternoon. This sounds really damned good tonight. Sleeping in tomorrow? A lot of reading? A legitimate couple of days to recharge? Good heavens yes gimme.

We pulled out of GenCon yesterday. I don't think the convention is going to happen, and even if it does, the company owners aren't coming in from the West Coast and my co-director isn't likely to make the trip from the UK. I could handle the staff scheduling and other management, but any of the company contracting and related work is way outside of my interest and comfort zone. So, no Best Four Days in Gaming this year. We'll deal with the fallout in 2021. I don't like it, but it's the right decision.

I finished watching Discovery, and came away pretty happy with it. The end of the second season planted plenty of seeds for more stories, and in a season or two, I'll resubscribe and catch up again. I'm a couple of episodes into Picard as of this morning. It's good so far, and I like seeing Picard's moral core again.

Related, there is a lot of Modiphius' Star Trek Adventures line on the Bundle of Holding right now, and since I have even more time than usual for reading, I'm probably picking those up soon.

Since I couldn't get a physical copy before the closures, I bought the iOS version of Terraforming Mars. It's been a real delight. I'm an easy mark for things Martian, and it's a darn good game.

Also on the electronic gaming front, I had a little lucky streak. I've been looking at subscribing to Sonys PS+ service, and was about to pull the trigger a few nights ago. Decided to consult Reddit about the service, and saw a post about a 25% discount for a PS Now sub - a boatload of streaming and downloadable games from three generations of PlayStations. So, I decided to go that route and made a note to pick up a PS card the next time I was at Speedway. Did so, and got a notification for a bonus $10 in PS credit. Not bad!
