Storms in America
Jul. 4th, 2007 11:44 pmThis was a great day, and I'm just about beat as a result.
Erin and I finally got to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End today. I liked this one; I went into it with extremely low expectations, given how awful PotC: Dead Man's Chest was. The pacing is much better. The humor is back, and there's a good sense of wonder about this one. There's one completely unnecessary and gratuitous character death, though, and the whole Calypso thing didn't impress me. Keith Richards' role is fun, and the movie should have gotten more use out of Chow Yun-Fat. And, well, I want a Captain Barbosa movie, now.
Afterwards, we ran around town for a while. I bought a DC HeroClix Legion of Super Heroes starter set, and it is quite nice. As evening came on, we headed for the planned highlight of the day - a Legends game, followed by fireworks. It was not to be. Monster thunderstorms came in, causing the game to be cancelled. The fireworks show did go off, though, and we really enjoyed it. Exchanged our tickets for tonight's game for tickets to an August 11 game - another fireworks night!
The drive back down I-75 was something. Storms started hitting again about the time we got on the Interstate, and a lightning strike took out the highway lighting. Rain and wind until we got just south of Clays Ferry, then it was all gone, and the road was bone-dry. We saw a lot more fireworks displays along the Interstate, including a huge series of blasts at Lake Reba in Richmond, and as we got to Berea, the city's display was reaching its climax.
I'm finally warmed up, after spending the last 5 hours in various degrees of rained-on and cold. It's time to crawl into bed, and get rested before what's likely to be an incredibly ugly day at work. I'm going to set the brain to deciding between a road-trip vacation in two weeks, or going to GenCon for the entire weekend come August.
