Nothing But Flowers
Sep. 12th, 2007 08:37 pmMuch as I want to, I'm not going to launch into a massive bitchfest about work. A river of stupid has been flowing through the place all week.
Recently read books:
Peacekeepers, by Ben Bova. Written in the late '80s/early '90s, it was a move for Bova into technothriller. The geopolitics of the book are rather dated, but it's still a decent and quick read.
The Forensic Files of Batman, by Doug Moench. Not bad. Lots of good crime theory and science.
Currently reading Ilium, by Dan Simmons. Only a couple dozen pages into it. Interesting so far, but, um, Dan, that was darn near kiddy-pr0n there, man.
Have I talked about comics lately? Don't recall. Let's see, what's come home with me lately?
Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin #1: I love this cover so very much. The comic itself is darn cool - how can anything that features Iron Man being inserted into Chinese airspace via stealth bomber be otherwise?
Daredevil #100: Damn. Big, big issue this month, beginning the 6-part "Without Fear" arc. Brubaker's writing is rocking my socks. The main story is backed up by reprints of two older issues showing the origin of the current Mister Fear, the arc's antagonist. Lots of Black Widow action, too.
Justice Society of America #9: Really felt like a filler issue, but it features a double-page spread of the JSA and a NYFD crew racing down the street to a burning factory. That alone was worth the purchase price.
Godawful summer heat finally broke over the weekend. This week has been beautiful - mid-70s afternoon highs, nighttime lows 15-20 degrees below that. Autumn is unquestionably my favorite time of the year. I love how it feels and smells and looks. So very much of that may be a remnant of how things felt for me in college this time of year - a new start, new studies, and a new crush every day.
