Digging Your Scene
Feb. 18th, 2008 08:52 amSo, the after-action report, which is different from my regular after-inaction reports ...
I took three days off from work last week - Wednesday through Friday.
Wednesday, as previously reported, saw the launch of the winter game - Legend of the Five Rings. Players kept feeding me ideas as the session progressed, so much so that I wound up with as many plot threads out of the session as I had mapped out for the entire game.
Thursday was a day of slack. Some reading and console gaming. Went out to a late movie at the Kentucky Theater - the "final cut" of Blade Runner. Still beautiful after a quarter-century.
Friday morning, Dad woke me up with the first of a string of birthday calls from family. Had another from my brother a few hours later, and then from Mom. The high point of the calls was one from Erin. As it was my birthday, I decided to pick up a present for myself, so it was off to the Rusty Scabbard. The chosen item - Scion: Demigod. Scion continues to do something amazing - present game fiction that doesn't make me want to stick things in my eyes. Gorgeous cover and interior art, a setting and mythology that rock my socks, and some pretty terrific writing. I'm resisting the temptation to bump this one a little higher on my To-Run List.
But I digress...
Erin's call came while I was on I-75 rolling south. I'd reserved a room at the lodge at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park - just something to get me out and away from the exceedingly familiar confines of my apartment. Lovely comfortable room, very quiet and peaceful, and the restaurant was terrific - while it's hard to screw up catfish, it's also a challenge to make it really really good. The restaurant succeeded wildly at the latter.
Saturday morning began with yet another phone call from Mom. She and Dad were planning to come up to Lexington for the day, primarily to pick up Mom's new eyeglasses. Thankfully, they weren't leaving Liberty immediately, so I had time to put myself back together, check out, and split Hell wide open to get back to Lexington before they arrived. We ran around town for a bit, and I got Mom to take a look at Civics and Jettas instead of another SUV. I'm blessed with a 4-mile one-way drive to work, so my Explorer's 16MPG isn't as onerous as it could be. Mom covers something like 70 miles a day in her round trip, so jumping from 16-17MPG to, oh, say, 30 or better would be a nice change for her.
Saturday night, I headed to the Dame to see Same as it Ever Was, a Talking Heads cover band. Good show, good venue, and I managed to spend some time, to use a phrase I sprung on the Trinity game Sunday afternoon, with a fruity-girly drink in one hand and a fruity-drinky girl in the other. Came home, checked the DVR, and next thing I know it's Sunday morning and I'm still on the couch.
Feeling extraordinarily good from the previous two days, I decided to investigate the Zaxby's out at Leestown and New Circle (good chain fast-food) and pick up some more books. Went to Joseph-Beth for Mary Gentle's Ilario duology and, upon
tegyrius' recommendation, The Lies of Locke Lamora. Those brought the To-Read Stack to 16 books. (Note to self - possibly double your before-bed reading time?) Trinity for most of the afternoon, then home-again-home-again-jiggity-jig. Watched the Knight Rider movie/pilot, and while I did enjoy the smokin' hot Mustang action, spent more time wincing at the thing than I should have.
This morning, I'm refreshed and renewed. I'm ready to head back to work in about 90 minutes and make it a good day. Mondays tend to be a little slow, so I expect to get in some time working on either L5R or the weekend's Stargate game.
Before I forget...
Now playing: Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA). Man, sometimes there's just nothing that compares to a good ol' 2-D side-scrolling adventure game.
Now reading: A Canticle for Leibowitz. I'm reading it this time as a dark comedy. It puts the book in a whole other light (or lux, if you prefer). Still a great book, and if you've never checked it out, I can't recommend it enough.
