Furloughed yesterday. Goofed around for most of the day, then off to Louisville to see D. Talked about plans for Christmas and New Year's Eve. Some last-minute shopping on her part, and she loved her gifts. Drove home a little earlier than I would have liked, but all good. There was ice cream upon my return.
Third Saturday of the month, so games today. Well, one game - Barbarians of the Aftermath. S has ran this for us before, and this game was a heck of a lot of fun. We had a couple of new players, and hopefully they'll be back later on, as one expressed an interest in GMing sometime.
So, about BotA ... Sean used the game's random-everything-creation system to set things up. The Big Oops for this game was a long-term societal collapse, followed by a low-intensity global war and the breakup of the United States. We played agents of one of the successor nations of North America, tasked with infiltrating another nation's territory and uncovering some plans. Good stuff all around.
I bought PDF copies of BotA and its parent game, Barbarians of Lemuria, a few nights ago, and while browsing DriveThruRPG, saw Lamentations of the Flame Princess and its Carcosa supplement on sale for all of $2.50 each. Added them to the purchase, and I've been browsing the PDFs since. I'm intrigued. LotFP is part of the OSR, I guess, and it's pretty nifty work. It, and Carcosa, have some mature themes and art, nothing that puts me off, but definitely not for everyone. And, they've helped remind me that there's more to fantasy than the stuff that's turned me off from the genre in recent years.
Storms to the west this evening. Could get interesting around midnight.
