Only If

I'm posting from my trusty late 2008 Macbook. I bought it in early '09, and it's served me without problem since. The battery is showing its age - I have the "service battery" alert, and one of the cells has gone bad, leaving the battery swollen, and battery life is only a couple of hours, even with power-saving measures active. So, I ordered a new battery, as I'm sometimes on campus for seven hours or more, and can't always just chain myself to a workspace with an outlet. And holy cow. A full charge on this new battery has kept me going for nearly six hours, with WiFi on, screen at better than 50% brightness, and a browser, Acrobat Reader, and various Microsoft Office applications running. Pretty nice.

Biostatistics continues to be my biggest challenge. I'm only getting about half of what's being presented in class, and I'm working hard out of class to keep the grasp I do have. My copy of Statistics for People who (Think They) Hate Statistics is getting about as much use as the course's assigned textbook. I'd be more bothered if I was the only one having this difficulty with the class - talk among the SPH students always comes back to this course and degrees of frustration. Lejla and Ivonne and I are getting into a routine of tag-teaming our homework assignments, and that helps. I'll do okay, but I'll be glad to see this course behind me.

Funny thing. I'm crushing a little bit on Lejla. Day before yesterday, she and Natalie and I were walking from Gottschalk to Davidson, and Lejla asked if I was going to join her and Ivonne after class; I told her I couldn't, had a date. I cut out as soon as class was over, and I guess she and Ivonne got together, because I got a text from Ivonne Thursday morning asking what I'd said to make Lejla act so jealous. Thursday afternoon, before class, Lejla peppered me with questions about the evening.

You play the hand you're dealt. I have to make sure that one that looks to be coming into play doesn't cost me a couple of friendships, though.

The Niece sent me a photo of her UofL ID this afternoon. So proud of this awesome kid. She's dealing with more crap than she should have to, and I'm preparing to shoulder some additional weight come next summer.

Back to Thursday. Got a reminder of how much I dislike prose poetry. I get it - you're not saying something that requires a lengthy narrative. Just tell the story. Flash/micro fiction works. It's what you're actually doing. Nifty tales, though.

Playing in a X-Wing tournament tomorrow afternoon. Can barely afford to take the time away from homework, but I need the break and a different kind of mental exercise. Testing out a very aggressive Imperial squad - point investment is very heavily skewed towards one ship (45 of 150) that'll hopefully stay alive long enough to knock out a couple of opponents.

And then, more homework. I should just take my bag with me and deploy to Quills after the tournament, since it's just across the street. Onward.
