I had something lighthearted and probably a little bit snarky here a little while ago. It wasn't really worth your time or mine, so here's this instead.
It's Independence Day, a half-hour or so after sunset. I had reasons to not want to be in Louisville today, so I decamped for Liberty - an appropriately-named place to spend the holiday. I came, as usual, seeking some quiet. There hasn't been as much of it as I would have liked, unfortunately, but there are worse things.
The always-worth-your-time Jim Wright posted a lengthy piece on Facebook this morning decrying the fetishization of the military. Since the World Trade Center attacks, there has been a constant competition among individuals and organizations of a certain stripe to prove themselves more patriotic than the next peer. This metric usually consists of ostentatious displays, more show than substance, and very often wrapped up with a call to "honor our troops," or "our American heroes" or somesuch. It's cheap and shallow, and it's become ubiquitous. I've had some ... spirited discussions over my refusal to stand when fucking "God Bless America" is played during MLB games (and I'm pretty happy that the Bats don't go in for that anymore).
