We had several months of warning with my grandfather. Time to talk with him and learn and suchlike. I do miss him - while we didn't really get along until about midway through high school, we became pretty good friends, and were very similar in many ways.
I never knew my maternal grandfather - he died when Mom was 11 or 12. My maternal grandmother ... well, let's just say I'm glad I grew up under the shadow of my paternal grandparents.
