How about 'beings from other dimensions'? In the magical sense that is, not parallel earths.
As for the super effect, I think in times when people are feeling down the need for 'supers' rises as it gives people something to look up to and make them feel better about themselves. Or something like that. It's past midnight here and I'm translating creatures from King Kong to the Ubiquity system - what do I know :p
