I could do with more days like yesterday.  Had three main options for the day - lay around the living room, go to a party in Knoxville, or go look at something cool.  The last option was the big winner.

I picked up [livejournal.com profile] elalyr and [livejournal.com profile] tegyrius and off we went to the Air Force museum in Dayton.  I hadn't been in a few years, and the last trip was very very short, so we headed out reasonably early and got there in time for a leisurely walk around.  Lots of good stuff to see, of course - some old familiar exhibits, and a few new ones, like an Avrocar!  The missile/spacecraft tower was open, and rather eerie for me, at least.  The big surprise was placed in an almost innocuous location - tucked along one wall in the Cold War hangar was an honest-to-God MiG-29.  It's a good-looking aircraft, and as Elalyr noted, the information on how this particular plane came to be in the museum's collection was conspicuously absent.

After the museum, some shopping.  Big-ass mall on the northeast side of Cincy for a visit to the Apple store, then over to Jungle Jim's.  Holy cow.  Where to start with this?  It's a grocery, but calling that is like calling Tiger Woods some dude that plays golf every few weekends.  An entire wall of cheeses.  30 linear feet of honeys.  Produce I'd never heard of before.  Aisles set up for goods from other countries - one country to an aisle (or alcove).  Dear heavens, the seafood counter.  Look, if you're in the area, and consider food to be more than just fuel for an organic engine, go.  Set aside a few hours to just wander around.

I slept late today.  Got up around 9:30, played Civ 4 for a while.  Watched The Atomic Cafe.  Watching football.  Writing some.  Will do laundry soon.

Almost finished reading Altered Carbon, and I have really enjoyed it.

Nope, no work yesterday.  Slept way too much.  Read a couple chapters of God Emperor of Dune.  Did a lot of navel-gazing about my current and near-future gaming.  I feel a break coming in the next few months.

Considering canceling out of a small commitment on Saturday night and heading out somewhere.  Like, Biloxi or thereabouts.  Got a four-day weekend to do something with, and I am not at all willing to spend it stretched out on this couch.

When the conversation begins with a variant of "what are you doing?" rather than a question requiring a specific bit of information - when did a particular event occur, who is this person's parent/child/sibling/what-have-you, what does the CS stand for - it means she needs a favor. I know this, and have for a long while.  I just forget it when it happens.

Started talking about the SW game Tuesday night.  I think I'm going to play a Jedi ambassador.  This should be interesting, and I'm already setting a pretty high bar for myself.

Thanksgiving was good.  No unwanted pests.  I mean, guests.  Played Cleopatra and the Society of Architects.  Talked about books and movies and games.  Watched the Lions continue to be dreadfully inept.  Saw a Cadillac pulled over by a DARE minivan on the drive home.  On the drive to Mom&Dad's, saw a lighted programmable highway sign flashing "CAUTION" over and over again.  Ah, Garrard County, land of unspecified peril.

Have maybe 90 minutes of work to do tomorrow.  Planning to divide my time otherwise between Civilization: Revolution and some game writing.

Much of the primary route between Lexington and Liberty is a Radio Dead Zone - virtually nothing but homespun gospel and country stations.  Sometimes you can get repeater stations of the EKU and WKU NPR broadcasts, and on a really clear night, WUKY for a while, but for the most part, at least half of the drive is a frustrating and constant tapping of the Seek button.  I'm constantly reminded that I need to upgrade Hephaestus' audio.

Tonight was shaping up to be no exception, but about midway between the Casey-Lincoln line and Hustonville, I picked up an FM station out of Stanford.  Instead of radio-friendly hat bands, there was talk.  Talk of ghosts and other supernatural things - like Coast to Coast AM used to be, before the Noory Times.  The in-studio guests were locals, with some good stories to tell, and one mentioned his time as a staff writer at Somerset Community College's newspaper.  This perked me right up, as I was on that staff for a couple of years, including a stint as editor.  I wondered, would he mention ... he did!  The two entities in Stoner Hall - one in the theater, one in the second floor hallway.  I tried calling in, as I wanted to see if the guests had the same sense of gender about the two entities that I (and my friends, a long time ago) did, but when I got to the Brannon Crossing light north of Nicholasville, both the station's signal and my cell connection went away.

It was good.

Aunt Clara kept her Bible right next to the phone
In case she needed a quote
While she talked to someone
In my memory she smiles while the blessing is said
And visions of freeze tag dance in my head
She says I'll grow up big
If I eat all my roast
I'll still believe in heaven
But I won't believe in ghosts anymore

I'll put away childish things

Every other weekend at the age of thirteen
With my fishing pole and my Field and Stream
Ridin' back home on the Trailways bus
I looked out the window
‘Til I saw too much
And I called my parents by their own first names
I played in the alley
But I didn't play the game anymore

I put away childish things

The wolves howl all night long
They won't stop and they won't go home
Beneath my window they run
Probably it'll be alright
If I keep it all locked up tight
And wait ‘til daylight comes

Now my boy goes like a house on fire
He'll never burn out and he'll never retire
And I remember when I used to think like that
When I was young and the world was flat
But I'm forty some years old now and man I don't care
All I want now is just a comfortable chair
And to sell all my stock
And live on the coast
I don't believe in heaven
But I still believe in ghosts.
