Two DVDs this weekend.

Smokin' Aces was enjoyable enough, but it's one of those movies that's more a collection of characters and scenes than an actual coherent story.  Part of the problem, for me, was the excess of characters, between the hit teams, FBI agents, and the target of the hit.  Not to say I won't be lifting some of them for use in later crime drama games, of course, but what should have been seasoning for the movie turned out to be the main course.

After having the DVD on my shelf for a couple of months, I finally watched The Prestige.  Christopher Nolan is a tremendous filmmaker, and this is a really good-looking movie.  Competing stage magicians (played by Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman), some mad science courtesy of Nikola Tesla (David Bowie), and some clever deception throughout.  This would make a terrific double feature with The Illusionist.  It did encourage me to give the Unhallowed Metropolis book a re-read this evening.

The Legends won last night over Lakewood, but the Louisville Fire beat the Horsemen, and pretty soundly.  The Horsemen are doing well in their first AF2 season - they've caused a three-way tie for first place in their division with Louisville and Green Bay.

I loved everything about the Prestige except Scarlett Johanssen, which is weird because normally I love her. I think her character was added (don't think the book had a love interest, or so I heard), and you can tell. She served the same purpose as Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York - to muddy up an otherwise interesting plot. But, dude. Bowie. As Tesla. That makes up for everything, lol.

I've done the back to back The Prestige and The Illusionist, which just made me enjoy The Illusionist more. I liked The Prestige well enough, I just hate having a movie where I generally dislike all the main players.

Picked up Smokin' Aces this weekend but having had a chance to watch it yet; I look forward to it for game inspiration at least.

I do think I liked The Illusionist better, and that came as a surprise. I did get a little tired of the out-bastarding one another parts of The Prestige.

Saw your mention of Shoot 'Em Up - I don't know that I've ever seen a movie deliver so perfectly on its promise. Loved the silly thing.

Meanwhile, the only thing that makes me want to watch The Illusionist is Jessica Biel (and Ed Norton). Perhaps if we could somehow go back in time and swap Scarlett for Jessica. Ahh, if only.

Oh, and Bowie as Tesla was FANTASTIC! :D
