My first Diecon has come and gone, and I greatly enjoyed it.  The drive out was easy, and the Taurus performed really well - 29.4 MPG, running at 70-80MPH with the AC going.  I felt pretty good about that until Andrew M showed up and his Prius' mileage log showed 44.9 on his drive from Charleston.

Friday night, I got into a GURPS Conspiracy X game run by a contact of [personal profile] tegyrius' from the Zombie Squad forums.  I hadn't played GURPS in several years, so this was a nice opportunity.  The game was a lot of fun, despite some problems with one weakly-designed character, and the mission (board an AEGIS-operated freighter and see what's gone on) was a preview of an accidental theme running through the weekend's games.

Saturday morning was a Twilight: 2013 showoff game.  Tegyrius had us tear through Abidjan in order to eventually ... board and secure an ocean-going freighter that could give our band of refugees a ride back to North America.  After lunch, my first scheduled Spycraft game came off ... involving DGSE and DST agents recovering a small liner that had been hijacked by Somali pirates.  I don't know how it was that every game I played in this weekend involved boarding and securing ships, but I liked it.

Because of the Spycraft live-action game, my Saturday night game only had one registrant, so I waved off on it.

Sunday morning was the last wobble through the dealers'  tables.  I got a copy of the Star Wars Saga Edition Threats of the Galaxy for $10 off cover and found one table selling Ubiquity system dice (for Hollow Earth Expedition).  We stopped at The Louisville Game Store on the way home, where I picked up Secrets of the Surface World.

While not gaming, I milled around the humongous number of miniatures games tables.  Some beautiful figs and terrain work.  Didn't get to play in anything, unfortunately, but I did see some things to look out for should I lose my mind and get back into minis gaming.

Things I always dig on about convention trips:
Getting to see friends I just don't see enough - in this case, the aforementioned Andrew M and the inestimable [profile] johnnyampersand
Making new friends
Getting new game ideas.  Tegyrius and I batted around a lot of ideas on the drive and at the hotel, including one big big idea involving ... well, that would be telling, wouldn't it?

Cool things that went on while I was away - Discovery's launch and possible water ice being found right beneath the Mars Phoenix lander.  I love science.

Now, back to the weekly grind.  This is going to be a long week, and I am less than happy about having to work late on Thursday nights for the next month or so.

Oh, in case the world needs more evidence of how terrific the Iron Man movie is ... my parents went to see it this weekend.  My father, who never watches a movie more than once unless its one of Morricone's spaghetti Westerns, asked if I knew when the DVD was coming out.  My mom, who only knows the character through my fandom, loved the movie.  My niece asked about comic books with Iron Man in them.
