Trojan Horsepower
Jul. 16th, 2018 02:55 pmMom was transferred to UK's Gill Heart Institute Friday evening. Danville conducted a heart catheter, and found blockages in her cardiac arteries. She's going to have open-heart surgery, a quadruple-bypass, probably Wednesday morning.
I went to Danville Friday morning, then on to Lexington when she was transferred. She was placed in a room at the old core hospital building, and that thing is a labyrinth. Dad stayed with her; Camille and Clayton put me up for the night. Saturday afternoon, Mom&Dad and I decided that it would be a good idea for me to go to Liberty and house- and dog-sit, and get ready for visiting relatives. House Oliver provided me with some reading material (that I thought I promptly lost), and it was off to the farm.
Relatives arrived sometime after midnight Saturday night. My cousin Freddie and his wife Angie are saints, y'all. They took in Freddie's mother - Mom's older sister Jeannie - and his brother Bub (I have never in my 46 years know his real name) a few years ago. Jeannie is pushing 80 and in the developing stages of dementia, and Bub's on a heavy rotation of psychiatric and anti-seizure medications. For my immediate family, this was a real boon - moving them to South Carolina meant Mom wouldn't light out for West Virginia on a whim. Anyway ... they're the ones who arrived. Angie stayed with Mom so Dad could get some clean clothes. Freddie and I sat up for a while catching up. They went back to Lexington around noon Sunday, back here last night, and headed back to South Carolina this morning. Angie's an ER nurse, so we had some good shop talk before they left.
Right now, we're just waiting. I'm scared out of my mind, and the support of friends and family is keeping me together. I know this is a known procedure and the surgeon could explain it step-by-step and show me a checklist, but ... this is my mom. What the brain knows and what the mind does aren't synced up right now.
