Strangelove
Mar. 6th, 2019 09:11 pmA function of having a job that you're ridiculously overqualified for is getting overblown recognition just because you show up and do the job well, even if that requires almost no effort on your own part. I'm in that position with the current McJob. I follow and excel at sets of procedures that, 90 percent of the time, require little more than having a pulse, sight and hearing, and basic cognition. So, because I do that, I get recognized and when a site supervisor asks the regional office for someone worth a damn, my name pops up. This has meant getting sent to the prestige sites, and on the whole, that's pretty alright. It also means I get some halfway decent leverage in accepting or declining additional shifts, and I have very little hesitation about asking for a specific day off.
It's ... it's an okay situation, within the parameters of the job, but I will readily leave it behind when the opportunity to get into a grown-up job again arrives.
The last three days, I've been at Metropolitan Sewer District's headquarters/business office down at 7th and Liberty. There are worse sites to be assigned to, that's for sure (looking at you, Shepherdsville), but it's really a tedious post. Sit at a desk, sign in and out badges and company vehicles, direct visitors to another place in the lobby. Watch an array of cameras. At PNC Tower, by contrast, there are foot patrols (getting in my Pokemon Go walks and gym battles) and interaction with tenants and enough little tasks that the time passes reasonably quickly. It's better, of course, during evenings and weekends - with the building being almost empty, I have plenty of time to read or listen to podcasts or generally screw around. It's marking time, but at least I can make some kind of decent use of the time.
Related, the time down that way has taken a toll on my Mariner. MSD is doing a lot of work under a Federal mandate to unfuck Louisville's wastewater treatment and storage and treatment system, and that means streets are torn to pieces throughout downtown. I've caught some debris in a tire, and it's caused a leak. I'm hoping it can be repaired instead of requiring replacement. I'll know tomorrow morning, one way or the other.
Hopefully getting to see the parents this weekend. Dad's going to an antique car swap meet at the Fair and Expo Center, and if I'm not working, he'll probably get me to go with him. If I am working, I expect it'll be an evening shift, so at least we can get breakfast together or something along those lines.
