In the past handful of days, a couple of big-time SF franchises have announced new products - a TV series from Battlestar Galactica and a new Star Trek movie.  In both cases, these are prequels, and I'm of two very very different opinions on these.

Battlestar Galactica is spinning off Caprica, which will be set a half-century before the current BSG timeline.  The new show will focus on two families, one of which will be the Adamas;  the development of the first Cylons will be prominent in the new series' stories.  I'm excited about this.  I think BSG is one of the best-written and best-acted shows on TV, and while the season two finale wasn't to my liking, I'm anxiously awaiting the new episodes.

After the spectacular successes of Nemesis and Enterprise, Paramount has decided that the best way for Star Trek to continue is to boldly go ... back to where it all started 4 decades ago.  An original series prequel, documenting the first meeting between Kirk and Spock and the rest.  Woo.  This sounds more like Schaivo Trek.  Dead, but no one's willing to say it.

I think the Star Trek movie could be pretty good. It's got a decent director attached. I don't think it will save the franchise, to be sure. But it could be a pretty good one shot.

Abrams is a fine filmmaker, in whatever capacity he places himself in. But this sow's ear could be placed in Michael Mann's hands, and it still wouldn't come out anything like a silk purse.

If Paramount is dead-set on relying on existing characters and going where scads of novelists and fans have gone before, there's more fertile ground to explore. Bridge the gap between the original series movies and TNG - Captain Sulu and the Excelsior would be the familiar bases.

I suspect you're in the same boat as me, and anxiously awaiting the new BSG episodes mainly in the hopes that they'll turn off the motorcycle that was revving in the background of the Baltar regime.

*sigh* Yeah. I think we're in the very small minority that didn't care too much for the season two finale.

Why I have hope for the new movie:

Berman is not associated with it. It has a chance.

That is a point in its favor.

Berman damaged the franchise pretty badly - he produced some great stuff (First Contact), but the bad really outweighs the good.
