Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Yesterday, I was in my first roleplaying game session since quitting the very bad Star Wars game several months back. D&D 5th Edition. A lot of good, some bad, and I had a good time. Mostly good players, a sharp GM, and an interesting sandbox campaign setting. The adventure itself was a trap/puzzle dungeon (so much hate for those), and, well, nerds gonna rage when their sacred (and stupid) cows get gored. On the whole, the positives far outweighed the negatives, so I'll go back for more.

This is a cool thing - the Philae lander is up and running again! It's getting power as 67P gets closer to the Sun, and sent messages and data to Earth.

I'm surprised at that, but I figure there's reasoning along the lines of:
If the player is coming from a recent previous edition, they have setting material already.
If the player is new or returning from an old edition, they're more interested in adventures than worlds right now.

I do love the little callouts to published D&D settings scattered throughout the Player's Handbook.

Yea. It seems to be a trend- 2nd had a ton of settings, 3rd had just a few, and 4ed started with one and then only eventually had existing settings come out.

Which is not a trend I approve of!
