I always thought my maternal grandmother died before I was born until we went to her funeral when I was in Junior High. My parents to this day insist they never told me that, but I know somebody did. Evidently 1) my mom and she didn't get along, and 2) she had Alzheimer's disease. I'm guessing somebody just thought it would be easier to tell the kid (me) she was dead. Ahhhhh, family.
