Ten years ago this week, on May 2 to be precise, my best friend and I blew off work for religious reasons to see a movie starring a troubled lead actor, based on a second-tier character, and with a script that was rewritten on a daily basis. But what a movie Iron Man turned out to be. Since then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made several hojillion dollars and spawned about 20 movies and a handful of TV series.

Wednesday, I saw the latest installment - Avengers: Infinity War. Tying together threads going back to Iron Man and presenting a genuinely existential threat, IW is a hell of an action movie. With three exceptions, every Avenger and Avenger-adjacent hero we've seen on the big screen gets time to shine. Since we're familiar with the characters, the movie doesn't have to spend any of its lengthy run time on establishing them. It just takes off running, continuing their stories. Pacing is just about flawless - it never drags, and at the same time, it never overwhelms the audience. It's something to see.

Today's the first Saturday in May, and that means the Kentucky Derby. Louisville throws a two-week party leading up to the race, and it's a heck of a time. The race itself was a mess - about three inches of rain came down today, so a muddy track and rain ponchos and all that. I've never gone, not to the Derby or any of the race days leading up to it. The only times I've been to Churchill Downs have been driving out-of-town guests by the track. It's just not my scene, but I have sure had some good times around the Derby.

Today's also Free Comic Book Day, and most stores have offered up some pretty good sales to pull in more business. Heroes tempted me mightily, but the sensible part of me put forth a good argument that buying an expansion for a game that I have yet to play isn't a good idea. So, I stayed away.
