After some more thought and consultation, I'm going to replace the ancient desktop first.  The question now is which iMac to get.  The candidates are a new 2GHz 20" model and a refurbished 2.16GHz 24" model.  The latter is an early Intel Mac with the glossy white polycarbonate shell instead of the current aluminum shell;  no big deal, really, and that 24" screen is tempting.  Very tempting.

18 hours until a lengthy break from the office, time to be filled in with lots of creative work.

If you're going to be doing work on the Mac, then I'd say go for the more powerful, larger screened option. I used to have a 21" screen, but moved down to 19" when I got my LCD. It sounds odd, but I miss those two extra inches (and the 1600x1200 resolution that came with them).

The bigger screen is a real draw. After the movie tomorrow, I'm going to the local Mac dealer and look at current-model 20" and 24" screens side-by-side.

I'll point out the 24" White iMac's screens are held in higher regard than the 20" Aluminum's.
