Major League Baseball season approaches. Opening Day is less than two weeks away, the holy day arriving on March 29. The Dodgers look very good again, and I expect to see them make a respectable postseason run.

UofL's at 16-3, nationally ranked #4. This is the program's first year as a revenue sport, and attendance hasn't seen much of a drop. The product remains very good, so people are coming out and paying their five bucks and having a good afternoon at the park.

Last night, during our weekly X-Wing night, power at the shop went out. Something failed in a store across the street, so we were in the dark for a little while. Play went on, with cell phones and the LED lantern from my Mariner's emergency box providing light to play by. The RPG tables were reportedly disappointed when the power came back on, as they enjoyed the ambience.

Went 1-1 in a casual Armada tournament this afternoon. I flew an Imperial fleet this time, after abandoning the idea of just rejiggering my Corellian Conflict fleet. I've had an Imperial Light Carrier sitting unused for a while, so this was a good opportunity to break it in. I've gotten surprisingly good results with the squadrons in my CC force, and wanted to try an Imperial counterpart. The first match went poorly for me - I made the mistake of sending the Carrier out at high speed with the escort ships and squadrons. The opposing Star Destroyers cut me to ribbons. In the second match, I kept the Carrier away from the enemy frigates, using my squadrons and lighter ships to wear down the opposition. Got the win by a good margin, and went home with a pocketful of alt-art promo cards and a much better feel for how to use the new(ish) ship.

The SWRPG group's spent some time working out what we're going to consider canon and not. We've determined that anything after the Battle of Endor is subject to change, and even within that guideline, some things are going to probably going to hew towards some established continuity. I need to hit a couple of markers for one player and get the PCs to Hoth before the events of ESB. Heck, they may be there for the big battle.

Pakistan is facing an outbreak of drug-resistant typhoid. There aren't many places left where typhoid is any kind of threat, and this new strain looks like really bad news. Pakistan still has poor sewage and water treatment systems, and with large crowded cities, typhoid will spread in a hurry. There's a new and very good vaccine coming out of India, of all places, and while it's getting some distribution throughout Pakistan, decades of hostility and distrust between the two countries is putting up barriers. Add in the lingering effects of Taliban propaganda and other cultural woes, and even in places where the vaccine is available, a lot of people refuse it.

Loosely related, according to a talk with Dr. Blakely, the SPHIS campus in Lahore has failed. The host university wanted to "go in a different direction," and SPHIS decided to cut its losses and find other venues. He was disappointed, but also seemed relieved to be able to stop fighting an unwinnable battle.
