A Necessary Bond

Except for Christmas Day itself, I've had a rather good time here at the farm. I've put a lot of miles on the Jolly Green Giant (Somerset on Monday, Danville on Tuesday, Louisville today), but I've been with my family, and I sure don't mind that. Had a heck of a good time with Dad on Tuesday, but hitting the road at 4AM took its toll on us. We were both dead to the world within a half-hour of getting back home.

I'm going to be able to make tomorrow's X-Wing tournament after all, and as an added bonus, I get to see some of the Lexington gang. I've found an X-Wing group in Louisville that's launching a nine-game spring league, with a championship in May. I'll take some biweekly starfighter action. Kicking things off with a pre-season game night on New Year's Eve, and right now, that sounds like a damned fine way to ring out 2014.

Y'know, I'm really enjoying this time at the farm. I'm looking forward to classes starting back up in a couple of weeks, sure, but right now, just having the time here is an utter joy. I've got the place to myself tonight (Mom&Dad and The Niece are off to see family in West Virginia), I have The Clone Wars going and a couple of new novels and the D&D 5th Edition Player's Handbook to read.

What type of squadron do you fly?

I'll fly just about anything. I shy away from the large-based ships (partially because I only have a Lambda shuttle in that range).

Today's mix was a TIE Defender, two TIE Fighters, and a TIE Phantom, no unique pilots, no modifications, 80 points. Went 1-2 in the tournament, but at the very least bloodied the nose of the opposition.

I'm going to fly Rebels in the league season.

It worked out well enough. I used the Fighters as screeners and to disrupt opponent maneuvers, and used the higher firepower of the Defender and Phantom to get in the harder hits.

The Phantom is tricky. I like how the cloaking effect works, both while active and when decloaking. I think that I'll add a Navigator to the thing next time I fly it so I can adjust a little better to opponent maneuvers.

Next up is a New Year's Eve game night. I'm flying two TIE Interceptors (Turr Phennir and a Royal Guard) and three Fighters (Backstabber, Winged Gundark, Academy Pilot) then, and starting off league play with two Y-Wings (Grey Squadron with Ion Cannon and R5-D8; Gold Squadron with R5-K6 and Flechette Torpedoes).

I've only played the game at a con, and there I used a phantom (since the figure was there *and* I had played the old game where it was from). It's a fun unit, and I'd think good in a group fight.
