So, my idiot housemate got himself arrested last weekend (October 15). I found out about it a few nights after it happened, thus explaining the couple of truncated voicemails I found that afternoon. The ongoing shouting match that these two needy emotionally immature twits have called a relationship for a couple of years came to another head, and got physical. It is, as to be expected, a whole big thing. Two charges, one a felony.  His defender thinks he'll get home incarceration, plea deal, etc. But he is deeply deeply fucked. I cannot imagine the firm he's been working for keeping him on after this.

I have a couple of escape routes, should they be needed. I'll be okay, and that's what's important.

Friday evening's DCC game went off well. Way more than well, really. Had four players, two new to DCC, and everyone got onboard quickly. Lots of good roleplay, and swordplay, and spellplay. Gosh, what a fun evening.

I finally decided I was worth the expense and treated myself to Gran Turismo 7. It's a beaut, unsurprisingly. Non-racing gameplay calls back to the GTs I played on PS2 - tuning is more detailed, there are used cars available as well as new and classics, licensing tests, missions, etc. Pretty good soundtrack on this one, too.

Friday's planned 2v2 X-Wing match became a 2v2v1 1500-point duke-a-roo when Pastor Scott made an appearance. I think we last saw him in the Before Time, and it was a great pleasant surprise to see him. Trash was talked, lots and lots of dice-rolling, and a good evening of play. And my team won, so, even better.

Aft
er my sixth Thunder Over Louisville, I'm just about over Thunder. The Derby Festival was determined to have some kind of event this year, and instead of one huge riverfront event with 600,000 people, there were to be five smaller airshows and fireworks displays visible from most of the city, and these locations were to be kept secret until just before the events. Didn't happen that way, of course. Some clever person looked into the city's fireworks permits and found the planned sites. So, two shows were cancelled because of concerns of large gatherings. One remaining show was at Bowman Field, pretty much in my backyard, so for a couple of hours Saturday night, my neighborhood and its small streets were packed with people, including one twit and her spawn who decided to park in my driveway. I showed my ass, I guess, but they moved.

The cop who killed George Floyd was found guilty on all three charges this afternoon -  second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. I expected the manslaughter charge to stick, if anything, but the prosecution made a heck of a case. Barring a heck of an appeal, a murderer is going away for a long time.

The new diagnosis is a bad alternator. Which is no bueno because the fool thing was put on the Mariner just a couple of months ago. It's under warranty, hooray, and the shop promised that if the new battery is ruined because of the alternator, they'll replace that as well. So, the wait continues.

The Green River and all the lesser creeks and streams in its watershed are back to normal now, but a lot of cleaning up has to be done. No word on when KY70 will be repaired; currently there's a temporary traffic signal at the washout. I figure a couple of weeks while surveyors and engineers do their things. Doesn't really affect me, but there's a lot of traffic through there, and I know that there's going to be an increase on the two county roads that let you bypass the washout - and one of those is the only way to Mom&Dad's.

The city of Louisville agreed to a $12 million settlement with Breonna Taylor's family. It's a step in the right direction, and now we're waiting to hear what the grand jury decides. I have to hope that the settlement is a sign that something like manslaughter 2 or negligent homicide is on the table. I'm pessimistic enough to expect nothing of the sort, and if that turns out to be the case (or not-case), then buckle up folks because the area around 6th and Jefferson is going to get wild.

Related, the city council passed a no-confidence vote on the mayor today. 22-4, so pretty resounding. The resolution doesn't call for Fischer's resignation - an earlier draft did, however - but it lays out steps that the council wants to see the mayor take.

I met the mayor a couple of times in school, and I liked him enough to vote for him when I had the chance. I've lost a lot of respect for him since March and the beginning of the demonstrations. He's made very little effort to rein in LMPD's excesses - allowing the chief of police to resign with full benefits was pretty damned weak, I think. He's term-limited, so unless he had designs on a higher-level office, his political career would be at an end when he leaves office in 2023. Even if he did want to run for something at the state level, I think he's too tainted by the Taylor story to be viable.

I post about baseball quite a bit, and a little bit about football. I very rarely discuss basketball for the simple reason that I just really don't like it. Today, though, I feel the need.

Tuesday morning (9/26), news started breaking about arrests stemming from a big-time Federal investigation into bribery and other malfeasance at four big schools. The report described further violations at some unnamed schools, and a little bit of examination showed one of them to be UofL - "research university in Kentucky," enrollment numbers, and a particular player's sudden commitment to joining the program, despite no recruitment of the kid. A hammer came down.

There are two prominent names here - Tom Jurich and Rick Pitino. Jurich is the school's athletic director, and is the person most responsible for UofL's rise to national prominence. He cut a deal with ESPN early in his tenure, bringing in a lot of money, money that became first-rate facilities for soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball, swimming/diving, and a host of other sports. Responsible for the good comes with responsibility for the bad, though. Which brings us to the bad - men's basketball coach Pitino. Pitino's always had a sketchy reputation, and recently, there have been two serious incidents. A few years ago, there was a maybe-rape that got turned into an extortion case. More recently, a story of prostitutes provided to players and recruits started coming to light. Pitino claimed ignorance, but no one really bought it. So, now this latest scandal, and he's again played the "I had no knowledge" card. It seems that UofL's administration has had enough. Yesterday, the interim University President, Greg Postel, had private meetings with both Jurich and Pitino, and effectively fired both of them. Officially, Jurich is suspended with pay, Pitino suspended without, but this is a formality while the board of trustees examines the contracts of both men to protect the University against wrongful termination suits.

I'm conflicted here. The going story is that Jurich refused to fire Pitino, and I'll buy it - Jurich has a reputation for intense loyalty. I'm glad to see Pitino go - the rest of Cardinal athletics is run without scandal or shame. Even Bobby Petrino seems to have cleaned up his act, writing a real redemption story. Jurich has been
an incredible boon to UofL, and his departure is going to sting. If Pitino is to be held responsible for what his staff did, then Jurich has to be, too.

This is tough. UofL's taken a lot of hits in recent years, with attacks by the state's idiot Governor, corruption in the previous President's office, and now this. Postel looks to be focused on repairing the school's reputation as much as possible during his tenure - he's still the Interim President, after all - and he is pretty popular among the University faculty and staff.

So, yeah, baseball. The Dodgers have the NL West championship, and home field throughout the NL playoffs. Three games left in the regular season; the Dodgers play at the Rockies to close things out. The Rockies are the probable second wild card team. Again, I'm conflicted. I want the Dodgers to have the best possible record, of course, but it won't affect standings now, and wins by the Rockies finish off St. Louis' post-season chances more quickly.
