Based on the character and story ideas we batted around on Tuesday night, I think this upcoming Star Wars game is going to be a good time.  I abandoned the Jedi aspect of my character idea - probably for the best, as two of the other three PCs are Force-users.  The Clone Wars is going to feed my lightsaber-swinging need for a while, I guess.

Wednesday night's Spycraft game almost didn't come together, but I'm quite glad that it did.  We ended the session with the two soldiers inside an office building under siege by 15 Russian mobsters, while the three other agents watched more-or-less helplessly.  The entire team is about to learn the cleansing power of high explosives, I think.

Justice Society of America is getting close to the end of the Gog/KC-Superman story arc, and it's been a pretty good run, I think.  There have been some off-putting moments, but they're few.  And I've got some bad feelings about where this is all going to go, particularly based on the "And evil shall inherit the Earth" poster from a while back.

I picked up Secret Invasion #8, having gotten a decent feel for the rest of the series and unwilling to wait for the trades to see the whole thing.  There were a few surprises, and I do see where the griping has come from.  I'm along for the Dark Reign ride, at least in the Invincible Iron Man and War Machine titles - and if Fraction's work so far is any indication, "World's Most Wanted" will be very enjoyable.

Planning to spend a good chunk of tomorrow in libraries.  I need to study up on submarines.  Maybe meeting with Mom&Dad for dinner.

Honestly, you got pretty much all there is to see of SI from the last issue. I wish I was kidding when I said the rest of the series was one big stupid fight scene. Anything worth reading about took place in New and Mighty Avengers as backstory. I hear the Fantastic Four short was also good, but I haven't read it.

What did you think of that last page? If you are afraid of spoilers, you can go over to my super-sekrit lj-cut SI8 post.

I liked the splash page well enough - I expect this to go better than Millar's Civil War abortion. And the teaser for War Machine showing WM throwing down against Ares makes me happy.

Sigh, Civil War... I keep trying to block that out of my memory.

Did you get to read the War Machine bits in Iron Man: Director of Shield? The first issue of it was awesome, the second was okay, and the third was just kind of boring. That was Christos Gage, though. I hear Greg Pak is much better. I do like the Magneto short he's doing much better now that they're touching on his powers now instead of it just being a cookie-cutter world war two story.

Civil War could have been fantastic. Instead, we got Millar spewing his nonsense all over the place. Back to the Ultimates and some Elseworlds stuff with you, Millar. You do good work there, but stay out of 616.

I figure Gage was just brought in to pinch-hit and do a quick-and-dirty transition from IM:DoS to WM. The Knaufs spoiled me during their run on DoS.

oops, put the comment in the wrong place...

I did like the Knauf run better on re-read. I think I'm too old to really enjoy 24 pages at a time anymore.

I blame Jeph Loeb more for civil war - that was kinda his idea. Millar gave it form, but Loeb was the one swinging his fist wanting to see heroes fighting heroes. *yawn* Millar made the mistake of porting over Ultimates!Tony (and Cap too, I think), and it didn't work. I think there were some forced editorial things going on there too, and it left a bitter taste in his mouth. I know he didn't want anything to do with SI, which is fine, because instead he came up with the future stuff that's now going on in Fantastic Four and Wolverine to kill the time.

It took me three issues and some spoilers to finally say I would read the Old Man Logan stuff (to forgive him for civil war, etc.), but I'm so glad I did. It's so much fun.

The Knaufs gave me some terrific superhero technothriller espionage during their run - I didn't know that that was exactly what I was wanting to read until they showed it to me.

I haven't read Old Man Logan, but the solicits and Newsarama stuff make me want to. Maybe in trade, maybe I'll just scoop up the issues in one pass.

I've only got/read the first three issues of execute program. Haven't read the end of it yet - keep trying...

It can be fun to play the "normal" character amidst a bunch of force users. Han Solo is popular, after all!

And, d'oh, I forgot to call the comic shop this week...I hope none of the SI crossovers sold out...

I'll second that. I'm also playing Star Wars at the moment and managed to prove myself more competent (in one way) than the Jedi by clearing a room of troopers with a single grenade.

Actually, now that I think about it, my characters tend to do a lot better with grenades than anything else. Hmm.

I will say, the only major deficiency with my character is that her grenades and autofire are less effective against large numbers of opponents than Force Slam and Move Object (provided a sufficiently large object). This means she has trouble with large quantities of Stormtroopers, who will eventually crit or hit her with coordinated fire. It's even worse when they don't stand close together...

The Jedi were the big shining lights, sure, but there were lots more stories to tell than just theirs. Lightsaber-wielding legally-authorized representative of the Republic sounded like fun (and still does), but so does scion of a frontierward noble house who believes in the Republic and will have to balance conflicting responsibilities without trusting to the Force.

My shop had a big stack of Dark Reign previews at the counter; I don't think I'm going to pick up anywhere near the entire run of them, but this is going on my probably-in-trades list. Hope you didn't miss any crossovers at your shop!
