Living in the Ohio Valley means, if you have any kind of pollen or grass allergy, that twice a year, you are going to experience a finely-tuned kind of hell. Mowing our small front yard a few days ago stirred up something that left me loudly and miserably sneezy and sniffly. Gabriel, our Tuesday night GM, was dealing with the same thing on game night, describing it as "[his] brain trying to drain out of [his] nose." Mine has gotten worse - I'm now dealing with either a bad cold or a mild and very early case of the flu. Bad enough that I scrubbed last night's Age of Rebellion game. Slept late today, slept for another couple of hours this afternoon. Keeping a steady flow of store-brand DayQuil/NyQuil going to keep the worst of it at bay.

Tonight would have been the aforementioned Gabriel's birthday party. Unfortunately, that had to be scrubbed - he was in a traffic accident Thursday (9/20) night. Heading up Bardstown Road and got hit head-on by a LMPD cruiser. He was hospitalized until this morning; reported in tonight that he's home and sore and thankful to be out of hospital.

Speaking of, one of the city's larger hospitals is in dire financial straits, following the breakup of the KentuckyOne consortium. Jewish is making noise about a potential closure in a few months; this, of course, would be a bad thing. I don't know if any of the city's healthcare companies would be able to, whether or not they're even interested, buying up Jewish's facilities. Somebody will; the property alone is too valuable to sit idle and empty.

Summer, 1989. I had just graduated high school and weaseled my way into a summer program for rising college freshmen going into medical majors. I wasn't, but I could write a good game and I wanted to get out of the house for the summer, meet girls, and explore Louisville before moving there. Anyway ... kinda-sorta dated a girl at the program; Michele was from far northeastern Kentucky. Smart, but quite naive and sheltered. So, one afternoon, we (the program participants) are touring Jewish Hospital's facilities. After a half-hour or so, Michele leans in close to me, and in a somewhat confused-sounding whisper, says, "Andy, these people don't look Jewish."

Regular season's wrapping up. The Dodgers are currently on top of the NL West, but it's tenuous.
