It's Halloween, my favorite holiday. It's a beautifully gloomy day - rainy and cool and leaves falling and all the good stuff. No parties, of course - I'm not a holiday party kind of guy.

Some reading - after seeing the movie who knows how many times, I finally got around to reading Something Wicked This Way Comes. Heck of a good book, and there's just no way not to see Jonathan Pryce as Mr. Dark. Bradbury was a simply amazing writer. After an episode of Unspooled on the first Hellraiser, I decided to dive into some Clive Barker. Years ago, I read some comics adaptations of his Books of Blood, and one of the stories stuck with me since - "The Skins of the Fathers." The prose original is maybe creepier than the illustrated version I read so long ago; Barker has a talent for making his monsters more sympathetic than they should be - Cabal/Night Breed, for example. Anyway, I'm reading through the Books of Blood on quiet nights and quite enjoying the trip.

Went to Liberty to see Dad over the weekend. A pretty good visit, even if we didn't do much of anything.

NerdLouvia is this weekend. I feel like I'm prepared enough for my games - just have to keep track of how Panic rolls trigger and what they cause to happen.

The Dodgers lost the World Series, 4-1. The BoSox were just too good, too together to overcome. I'm disappointed, moreso than last year - 2017 went seven games, most of them close and competitive. This Series just wasn't enjoyable to watch.

I bailed out on ... no, I missed a Mage session for one game of the Series, and in a way, I wish I'd gone gaming. Our GM is running a terrific campaign, most of the players are fantastic, and I am having a hell of a time with this. The D&D game ... not so much. I'm coming to believe that I'm just not meant to enjoy D&D anymore.

It's Halloween, my favorite holiday, and we sure had us some seasonally-appropriate weather.  Strong wind and heavy rain and even some thunder and lightning. Didn't get quite the amount of rain that some forecasts were calling for, and given Louisville's vulnerability to flooding, I'm glad.

For perfectly good, if boring, reasons, I didn't do much celebrating. Stayed in, savored the storm, and spent a couple of hours playing The Last of Us. It's been sitting on my PS4's hard drive for months, and tonight seemed a good time to finally start playing it. Heck of a good game, so far.

My player problem resolved itself - he dropped out of the game. The game moves on. I think the players are have gotten enough of a handle on things that I can start tightening things up and presenting them with more challenging sessions. The Jedi's player asked about an Inquisitor, and I couldn't be happier with this.

Saturday: Played Armada. Got whupped. Learned a bunch. Have lots more to learn. Opponent (regular X-Wing player and one of my RPG cast) gave me a handful of alt-art prize cards. Ordered Battlefoam storage pieces. Bought a Mon Calamari frigate (host store running a 40% off sale). Looking forward to more. FFG has a campaign box coming down the pipe, and I think Pet Shop's organizer is getting the league kits.

X-Wing league playoffs are Friday night. Some of us that didn't make the cut are planning another Epic game. I'm playing Rebels this time, finally using my Corvette for something more than an eye-catching obstacle in smaller games. My teammate is planning to field a Transport, and I considered building a 200-point starfighter escort list instead, but, nah. I play for fun, and I really want to see what this CR90 can get up to.

Woke up sick on Sunday. Upset stomach, and the obligatory accompanying weakness. Thought maybe it was from bad eating choices Saturday evening; probably actually viral. Icky. Resolved in the late afternoon, so there were errands before the late NFL game. Meijer on Hurstbourne was run over with Pokemon. Came back, did homework.

It's Halloween! WFPK is playing appropriate music all day, and I'm in a great cheerful mood. Maybe going to Headliners for the Lucius show. Maybe just going home and watching or reading or writing something appropriate. Whatever happens, it's the most wonderful time of the year.

Halloween night saw a line of storms come through town. There was some scattered damage, and here at the complex, a tree fell onto a couple of vehicles. Scattered power outages, as to be expected. Made things interesting for a little while.

I saw Ender's Game last night, and was not impressed at all. The movie's pacing is a mess, and the ending seems even more rushed than in the novel. There's very little time given to showing us why Ender is such a mess, only that he is, but he's also the Chosen One and all, so, audience, just go with it, okay? Hailee Steinfeld's good, and Ben Kingsley, too, but the rest of the cast is either phoning it in (the adults) or mostly stuck with a fairly weak script and not quite able to make it work. Not recommended.

Had planned to run Eclipse Phase today, but turnout and energy levels were both too low. Going to try again in two weeks. Hoping like anything that we're able to get in a Deadlands session tomorrow night.

It's Halloween!

I went to Lexington's Halloween celebration last night, mostly to see Space Madness on the Planet of the Apes by the March Madness Marching Band - and yes, they did "Rock Me, Doctor Zaius." Lots of people there, some good costumes, and the parade was a joy to behold.

I'd planned on driving to Florida this evening to see Space Shuttle Discovery's final launch, but that's pushed back until Wednesday afternoon, and I can't make that and be back in time for my flight to Las Vegas for NeonCon. I'll settle for CNN coverage, I guess. Only three missions left, and then the US is reduced to hitching rides on somebody else's spacecraft until at least 2015.

I'm looking forward to NeonCon, for the most part. The flight's going to be a hassle, what with all the TSA circus acts, but I can deal. The Fantasycraft adventure I'm scheduled to run (twice) is ... well, I really really don't like it. The Spycraft mission is a good one, though, and it looks like there will be a lot of opportunity for pickup games. And, well, I'll be in Las Vegas.

I'm reading Jacqueline Carey's Naamah's Kiss at present. Liking it rather a lot, unsurprisingly. Looking forward to Amexica, sometime after I get back.

Pulling for the Texas Rangers to win the World Series. Pleasantly surprised that the Oakland Raiders are 4-4. And stunned at the disintegration of the Dallas Cowboys.
